Peter Rowan & the Green Grass Gringos – Bedford, NY – 9-13-1980

by Luke Harris on August 10, 2009

RowanGreenGrassGringosPictured here playing their Texas – Mexican Bluegrass music at a different festival in 1979.   I was pumped to find this picture!   While listening to the show I was curious about the guitar that Peter was playing.   Looks like a pre-1979 Martin D-28.

With some inspired fiddling from Tex and first rate picking from the rest of the boys, this is some real bluegrass.

Lamar Grier played banjo for Bill Monroe while Peter Rowan was in the band, and is the father of guitarist David Grier.    He plays a great version of “Clinch Mountain Backstep” that you can listen to here.

I saw Barry Mitterhoff a few years after this playing in Tony Trischka’s fine band Skyline. If you ever run across any material by them, I’d love to see it here!M
