It’s got everything you could want in a new record from American’s most versatile rock band.   A Cesar ballad, a power three guitar attack track, some great Hidalgo accordion, and some near perfect Hidalgo guitar solo’s.   I love the groove they get on West L.A. Fadeaway along with the baritone sax.

With Los Lobos no longer allowing soundboard recording, I was real fired up when I saw this stellah matrix recording pop up.   Now that I’ve had the chance to listen to it a couple times it’s defiantly up there with the other fantastic Los Lobos live concerts I’ve posted.

The Wolves play a scorching set with couple tunes from the new record, which sound great.

They also pay homage to Carlos Santana, John Lee Hooker, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Grateful Dead, The Sir Douglas Quintet, Ritchie Valens, The Allman Brothers Band…

The Allman Brothers Band in 2009

Robbie pointed out that The Allman Brothers Band show on March 12th at the Beacon this year will be the 40 year anniversary of when At Fillmore East was recorded.   Obviously the boys are planning something very compelling for that date and also the whole Beacon run.

That sold out show will be something, and its a pretty hot ticket.   Whose got my extra?

The Allman Brothers Band At Fillmore East is easily one of my favorite albums.   I pulled out my copy on vinyl the other day, hadn’t listened to it in years, and surprisingly I remembered all the scratches, pops and crackles all over it.

For some fun I put together a mixtape of all the At Fillmore East tracks played live in 2010.   Click here to download the mixtape.

The tracks were taken from shows at New York’s Palace Theater, Wanee Festival and Boston’s Orpheum Theater.   The band was in fine form in 2010, in every regard.   All the members are playing at the top of their game.   As a sample I posted “Stormy Monday” for you to listen to over here.

On top of this Allman Brothers Beacon run, 2011 is shaping up to be a big year for solo records from the band members.   Greg is releasing Low Country Blues next week.   Which you can stream on NPR right now, and it sounds awesome.   In the spring Warren is releasing a solo album of soul music.  When I was hanging out with Derek and Susan the other day they mentioned slowly recording some tracks for a release this year.

You may have noticed that things have been kind of slow around here.   Being employed and having to work through a few things (mental or otherwise) put this place on the back burner.   All I can say is; I’m back! And therapy bills are worth it…

I saw Robert Randolph play and be interviewed at the workshop stage at Crossroads Festival this summer.   He grew up in a black church playing Gospel music.   It wasn’t until someone gave him a Stevie Ray Vaughan DVD that he realized white people can play music with soul in Rock & Roll.   I’m not sure what the DVD was, it might have been Stevie Ray Vaughan & Jeff Beck playing “Going Down”.   Who knows?

This Stevie Ray show is pretty well circulated, maybe because there is not too many soundboard recordings from late in his career.   The sound quality is a bit warbled at the start, but it gets better.   Check the track “Couldn’t Stand the Weather” here: play

This is the new band I mentioned earlier that Derek was forming.   Alas the lineup, listed below, is a little different from the one I envisioned.   I am pretty fired up that Oteil and Kofi Burbridge are playing together.

The husband and wife duo are pictured here with Hubert Sumlin and Steve Winwood.

The band plays a bunch of new material they have worked up.   They have written some new tunes and also cover some real gems.   Including one of the greatest songs ever written, “Corrina, Corrina”, by Taj Mahal.   The tunes to close out the set and also the encore are phenomenal.

Willie is plugging his soon to be released record Country Music.   I’ve been fired up for this release ever since Linda posted about it on Still Is Still Moving.   The album is produced by T Bone Burnett and also includes Buddy Miller, who unfortunately doesn’t play on this show.

For this show Willie pulls together a bunch of the best Bluegrass and Old Time musicians and plays a bunch of new (for him) tunes.   It would be great to see The Willie Nelson Bluegrass Band on tour this summer.   An appearance at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival looks unlikely, along with one from me.

It’s time for some feel good music, New Orleans style, to celebrate Fat Tuesday.   If this doesn’t get you moving, then I’m not sure what will.

This outstanding recording is from right before The Meters broke up in 1977.   They toured with The Rolling Stones  in 1975 and played a funky version of “Honky Tonk Woman” at this live concert.   The 20min version of “Ain’t No Use” is fantastic.

The Reverend Al Green released a great record last year, Lay It Down, with The Roots’ ?uestlove on drums and producing.   He plays the records title tune at this show and most of his classic tunes from the 70′s.   And from what I hear is typical fashion for the Reverend, he doesn’t play an encore.

Also, big shout out to one of my favorite writers, Seth Godin, for today’s launch of his new his new book Linchpin.   I am about half way through an advance copy that I was clever enough to commandeer and I have really enjoyed it so far.   It’s a book about making a bigger contribution to things that matter and being an artist.   Even if you don’t paint or write songs etc.   A very timely read for me being half way through the second week of a new job.

Seth, drops plenty of knowledge throughout the book.   Specifically on page 41 in what could be the most widely quoted passage in the book:

Donald Bradman was an Australian cricket player.   He was also the best athlete who ever lived.   By any statistical measure, he was comparatively the best at what he did.   He was far better at cricket than Michael Jordan was at basketball or Jack Nicklaus was at golf.

It’s very difficult to be as good as Donald Bradman.   In fact, it’s impossible.

So Seth, an American writer in New York City, clearly knows his stuff.   He goes on to say that none of us will have the skills to be like Willie Nelson, Jerry Garcia or especially Terry Schlicting.  However, each of us have talent and can generously contribute and can develop the ability to move people.   It’s an inspiring book.

On to the show here today, we have some Aussie Americana music from Kasey Chambers.   Never been to this Festival but many of my people back home love it and go every year.   The lineup this year, right here, is first rate again.   If you are ever in Australia you will probable end up in Byron Bay.   Some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.   It’s an amazing place.

Bill Chambers, Kasey’s dad, does some great guitar playing on this show.   He played on the Buddy Miller show I posted here also.   “Runaway Train” is posted over here for you to check out.
